Throughout the years, Rudy von Strasser has developed a distinct style and brings this approach to each of our three brands.
Von Strasser wines historically have been made exclusively from the Diamond Mountain District. Located in North-west Napa Valley, this AVA has been long known for its Cabernet Sauvignons; benefitting from intense sunlight, cool nights, and porous volcanic soil. Producing three distinct tiers, Rudy has an approach to each level. The first tier, or “entry-level” wine is our Diamond Mountain District Cabernet; a wine made up of the lighter, less tannic, or lots that are not quite representative of the Single Vineyard tier. This wine typically sees 30% new oak for 18 months. This wine is a beautiful early drinking wine that could also be laid down for a 10 to 15 years. The second tier, or “Single Vineyards” is something of a signature for Rudy. Working many vineyards over these many years has allowed Rudy to display all that Diamond Mountain has to offer. These elegant Cabernets and Red Wine blends are created year-to-year based on what the terroir and harvest season gives us. These wines will see 50% new French oak for 22 months and can age for 10-30 years. The third tier is our most coveted: The Reserve Red wine. A singular wine that is only made in the most exceptional years. Born from a passion of not only Cabernet Sauvginon but also Petit Verdot, this wine is always 40% Cabernet and 40% Petit Verdot, with the other 20% coming from other exceptional lots, usually Merlot, Malbec, or a combination of the two. Rudy does not make this wine every year; he only does when there is a barrel of both Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot that head-and-shoulders above the rest. This wine is also the only wine to receive 100% new French Oak. This wine is consistently in the Wine and Spirits Top 100 wines in the world.
Lava Vine wines are made from some of the best single vineyard sites from all over California; focusing on Santa Lucia Highlands in Monterey, Suisun Valley, Mendocino County, and of course Napa Valley. The goal of the Lava Vine wines is to create exceptional wines from varietals not normally produced in Napa Valley. Wines such as Grenache (old and new vine), Malbec, Gruner Veltliner, Zinfandel, Tempranillo and a Chardonnay that is more akin to Chablis than California. These wines come from vineyards that Rudy hand picks himself. Each wine undergoes unique fermentation and barreling programs to present the best representation of that vineyard and varietal. Additionally, there is the Lava Vine reserve red wine; ‘A’a. Named after a type of lava flow, this North Coast red wine blend of exceptional lots, comes together to create a beautiful, elegant wine.
The Rudy wines are made négociant-style. Producing Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel, these wines begin their lives as Lava Vine or Von Strasser wines but then are supplemented by exceptional “bulk wine lots”. This allows us to make incredible wines that are of incredible value. Typically, you will find these wines in restaurants and wine shops across the country.
